ABOUT THIS TRIP
Fly Fishing + Chukar Hunting + Rafting
This trip is designed for anglers and hunters who want both without compromising either.
Float the Middle Fork each day on dedicated fishing rigs. When guides spot a covey of chukar on the canyon walls, they pull over and hunt them down. Return to the boats when the opportunity is exhausted, then keep fishing.
Guides prepare fresh chukar appetizers at camp each evening. The fishing never stops unless you want it to.
All Meals & Snacks
Fresh, camp-cooked meals every day. Consistently the detail guests mention most.
Camping gear & tents
All camping gear is handled for you. We use high-quality, dependable gear that will keep you warm and dry throughout the trip.
Rafts, kayaks, & safety gear
All river equipment provided. No prior experience required, we'll make sure you're trained on you on your watercraft before departure.
Fishing Gear
We always bring a handful of fly rods and plenty of flies, tippet, etc. You are welcome to use our equipment, but keep in mind that it is shared among all of the guests
Hunting Gear
We do NOT provide shotguns, ammo, or hunting specific clothing/vests. Please plan on bringing your own. If traveling with or shipping your firearms is impossible, please contact us to discuss possible solutions.
Hunting & Fishing Licenses
Hunting and fishing licenses are required, and NOT provided by Middle Fork Adventures. Please visit Idaho Fish & Game.

ABOUT THE DATES
This is the only time of year that we can fish, hunt, and raft all on the same trip. This is an amazing time to experience the Middle Fork with cooler temps, clear dry weather, and be awed by the beautiful fall colors.
01
THE FISHING
Shorter days signal fish to feed aggressively. They're preparing for winter and won't resist a well-presented fly. One of the most productive windows of the entire season on this water.
02
THE HUNTING
September 20 is Opening Day. These birds haven't been pressured. The Frank Church canyon terrain mirrors chukar's native habitat in southwest Asia, so they thrive here. We will float until we find them.
03
THE CONDITIONS
Cooler temperatures. Dry, stable weather. Peak fall colors in the canyon. Fewer people on the river than summer months. The Middle Fork at its most beautiful.

HOW THE TRIP WORKS
MORNING
Launch & Fish
Each boat carries two anglers and a dedicated guide. Fish the Middle Fork's pristine cutthroat fishery at your own pace. Switch between our nimble fishing rafts and larger, stable platform rafts.
MID RIVER
Pull Over & Hunt
Guides spot chukar coveys on the canyon walls. Everyone pulls over, grabs a shotgun, and chases them through the terrain. Return to the boats once the opportunity is exhausted, then back to fishing.
AFTERNOON
Continue Down The River
More water. More fish. Interact with all guides and guests by rotating between boat types throughout the week.
EVENING
Camp
Tents up, dinner underway. When the hunting is good, guides can serve fresh chukar appetizers to complete the day.
YES! If you enjoy the serenity and excitement of backpacking combined with the comforts of home, this is the trip for you. No prior experience needed. Our guides take care of you better than your mother. . .well almost better.
Middle Fork Adventures practices “Leave No Trace” camping and “Pack in/Pack out” applies to everything - no need to dig any holes. At lunch and at camp each day, our guides will set up portable toilet facilities, lovingly referred to as “Groovers.” (Ask your guide about the namesake if you’re interested.) The groovers will be set up in a private location, with the best possible view of the canyon. At each groover there will be toilet paper, a hand-wash station, and a trash can for feminine products.
Well there are no TVs, no WIFI, or no cell phones, so truly the options are limitless. You get to do what your heart truly desires the Middle Fork of the Salmon offers world class fishing, hiking, and scenery. This means you can hang out at camp while our guides prepare fresh appetizers. Hike up side creeks. Soak in hot springs. Play horseshoes, bocce ball, or other camp games. Attend short talks by the guides on history, ecology, geology, etc. Get to know your fellow travelers around a campfire. Star gaze. Practice your guitar skills.
The weather largely dictates how you dress, and your guides can help you with daily clothing selection based on the weather and the day’s activities. Most of the summer is warm and dry, so lightweight synthetic clothes that dry quickly are a favorite among guides. It does rain in the Frank Church Wilderness and it can get chilly at night and during early and late season trips, so we do recommend that you bring wool and fleece layers as well. Please see our packing list for more detail, and always feel free to call us for specific advice!
If your trip starts in Stanley and you are driving, you'll want to get it shuttled to Salmon during the trip. Your car is the best place for personal belongings not coming on the river. We are happy to store items in our boat house during the trip- just give us a call!
Yes. Participation in the hunting is entirely optional. If you'd rather stay in the boat and keep casting while others chase birds, that's a completely valid way to spend the afternoon.
On a Middle Fork Adventures trip you will quickly find that river camping is a far cry from “roughing-it”. We always have two hand-wash stations set up in camp to wash our hands - one near the groover and one near the kitchen. We have great strategies for bathing which your trip leader will discuss with you before the trip.
In the event of a medical emergency, you can take comfort in knowing that all of our guides are trained in first aid and have many years of wilderness training- some are even EMTs or Wilderness First Responders. The guides will assess the specific situation and determine the best course of action, whether that is to treat and monitor or evacuate. Evacuation costs will be borne by the individual.
No, Middle Fork Adventures provides tents as well as your cot, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, and pillow. We strive to have all tents set up before you get to camp so you have a place to change and relax at the end of the day. Our tents are 6-person tents, however we assign only two guests to each tent, which means you’ll have plenty of room and will be able to stand all the way up. Cots also make sleeping more comfortable and easier to sit up in the morning. While some companies charge extra for “deluxe” sleeping accommodation, this comes standard at Middle Fork Adventures as part of our Full Service Trip!
We are more than happy to make accommodations for any food allergy, sensitivity, or dietary restriction. Please communicate any concerns or questions you might have to us prior to your trip launching.

Many guests travel with a cased shotgun without issue. If that's complicated for your situation, call us before ruling it out — we've helped guests work through this before and likely have options.
The Middle Fork Adventures team will help you determine your travel logistics to and from Idaho, help to book your lodging before and after your trip, and answer any of your questions along the way. We provide top of the line rafting and camping equipment and every camping package is deluxe. Our exceptional guides and staff are unparalleled leaders and take care of anything you may need during your adventure.
Most importantly we provide a warm inclusive atmosphere. We don't want you to just go on an adventure we want you to actively be a part of it!Our team is dedicated to taking the stress out of vacation and trip planning and delivering the highest quality, professionally led river trip in the industry.
